Underground Hydrants
Underground hydrants are installed below ground level and are protected by a metal or plastic box, which provides access to them. These hydrants are less exposed to weather and vandalism, giving them a longer lifespan and a superior degree of protection. Access to the hydrant is achieved by lifting the box cover and connecting the hose to the fitting located below ground level. They are ideal for high-traffic areas, such as busy streets or pedestrian zones, as they do not obstruct circulation.
Above-ground Hydrants
Above-ground hydrants are mounted above the ground and are easy to identify due to their vibrant colors (usually red or yellow). They are more accessible for firefighters, allowing for quick intervention. Above-ground hydrants are divided into two main types: Type C and Type A.
Type C
These hydrants have a single main hose connection and are built to be durable and robust. They are frequently used in industrial and commercial areas where a large and constant flow of water is needed to handle high fire risks.
Type A
These hydrants have multiple connections, allowing several hoses to be connected simultaneously. This provides flexibility and efficiency in fire extinguishing interventions. Type A hydrants are often found in residential and urban areas, where rapid access and the ability to serve multiple intervention teams are crucial.
